All three major US stock market indices didn’t even break 1% combined this week (i.e.,: DJIA: +0.01%, S&P 500: +0.21%, Nasdaq: +0.69%). In fact, the indices haven’t moved much over the past three weeks. What’s going on? The markets have been expecting lower rates to fuel the next growth spurt. However, anticipated interest rate decreases may be postponed (see the Argus Market report below) in response to strong economic data (like the announcement on Friday that the unemployment rate dropped in November to 3.7% from 3.9%). A recession seems farfetched for now, while higher interest rates may remain for longer. For some ideas on what to do, read Capital Group’s “Stock market outlook: It’s time for diversification.”
