DJIA hits 40,000 in continued market climb

May 19, 2024

From the desks of Stanley Katz & Lauren Madera

In celebration of the Memorial Day holiday, we will not be publishing the Weekly Highlights & Commentary next weekend. To the people who serve our country today and have served in the past, we thank you.

Make that four weeks in a row that all three major US stock market indices were in the green (i.e., DJIA: +1.24%, S&P 500: +1.54%, Nasdaq: +2.13%). That’s the good news! By many metrics and models, however, inflation does not seem to be moderating, which likely elongates any Federal Reserve decision to cut interest rates. With the S&P 500 trading at 21.24X earnings and the DJIA hitting (but not closing) above 40,000, one must wonder how much higher the indices can climb without a pullback. Take a look at Argus’ Weekly Staff Report for their spin on current conditions.

Make no mistake — the US stock market appears to be priced to perfection. Reported corporate earnings continue to meet and, in many cases, beat expectations. Zacks’ comments in their link below that, perhaps, there may be more positivity to come.

Below are links to a number of third-party research reports that we have read and analyzed over the past week. We hope you will find the information interesting, useful, and worthwhile.

Argus:

  • May Recoups April Losses, but Inflation Risks Remain

Zacks:

  • Current Earnings Outlook Reflects Positivity

Schwab:

  • The Pace of Rate Cuts

J.P. Morgan Asset Management:

  • What’s going on with auto insurance costs?

Capital Group:

  • Meta shifts the narrative on dividends in the world of Big Tech
