The Stock Market is Feeling Good…For the Moment

January 15, 2023

From the desks of Stanley Katz & Lauren Madera

STAY SAFE AND HEALTHY!

After the negative results from 2022, should we just stop the clock right now for 2023? All three major US stock market indices produced positive returns (i.e., DJIA: +2.00%, S&P 500: +2.67%, Nasdaq: +4.82%) for the second week in a row, taking the year-to-date figures to +3.49%, +4.16% and +5.85%, respectively. Gosh, that feels good…for the moment. 4Q2022 earnings announcements began Friday. Thus far, they have come in as expected for the most part. With the economy slowing, earnings will reflect a slight reduction both on a quarter-over-quarter and year-over-year basis. On this topic, look at the J.P. Morgan Asset Management piece, “On the Minds of Investors.”

PIMCO takes a deeper dive into where the economy may be heading in 2023. You have most certainly heard the resounding drum beats of a recession. Will it be a mild or a harsh one? Fed Chairman Powell speaks of the pain we must endure. The layoff announcements started a few weeks ago, but the economy as well as the US stock market seem to be absorbing them thus far. Click the link for some great insights.

Last week, we shorted you with only four research pieces. This week, please find a sixth one which has a list of ten book ideas from Capital Group’s portfolio managers, analysts, and economists. Enjoy!

Below are links to a number of third-party research reports that we have read and analyzed over the past week. We hope you will find the information interesting, useful, and worthwhile.
