Is it time to get giddy about the US stock market? For the week, all three US stock market indices (i.e., DJIA: +4.15%, S&P 500: +5.88%, Nasdaq: +8.10%) gave us hope as we head to the finish line for the year. Year-to-date the indices stand at -7.22%, -16.22% and -27.62%, respectively. Thursday’s enormous rally came on the heels of a reported Consumer Price Index rising less than expected. Supposedly, that means the Federal Reserve may not increase interest rates at quite the same pace as they have been. Several market analysts are skeptical about the veracity of the market’s recent performance—and, rightfully so, when one looks at the slowing of the economy. Schwab’s Market Perspective “Stress Cracks” offers some food for thought.
The other big event of the week was the midterm elections. Although the results have not been solidified in one direction or the other, further political gridlock appears to be in our future. Capital Group provides their analysis. Click the link below for more on this topic.
