Wait, The Market Was Up This Week?

July 24, 2022

From the desks of Stanley Katz & Lauren Madera

STAY SAFE & HEALTHY!

Have you ever had one of those weeks when things didn’t seem to go very well but, on the whole, they actually did? Maybe the summer malaise has set in cause that’s what happened to the US stock market indices with all three posting gains (i.e., DJIA: +1.96%, S&P 500: +2.56%, Nasdaq: +3.33%). The Federal Reserve Open Market Committee meets this week, and much talk surrounds concerns about inflation and recession. By definition, a recession is two consecutive quarters of declining economic growth. A number of industries have already experienced recession-like conditions whereas others, like the travel industry, are booming. In reviewing 2Q2022 earnings, better than half of the 104 companies that have reported thus far have posted better-than-expected revenues, and almost 75% beat anticipated profit expectations. Having lived through the second quarter, it certainly didn’t feel that way! For more on this topic, click the Schwab Markets & Economy link below.

Sometimes in our Weekly H&C, we provide a very in-depth research piece in order to appease those that wish to dig deeper into the weeds. Fidelity’s Quarterly Market Update for the third quarter does exactly that. Naturally, you can also scan through it and capture some very salient points. Click it!

Below are links to a number of third-party research reports that we have read and analyzed over the past week. We hope you will find the information interesting, useful, and worthwhile.
